Popphoto.com - NYC Mayor’s Office to Close Comment Period on New Photography Restrictions
Wednesday, August 1st, 2007The City of New York Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting (MOFTB) will stop accepting public comments on proposed photography and video restrictions on August 3, 2007. As The New York Times recently reported, the new rules have drawn protests from both the New York Civil Liberties Union and Picture New York, a group created to counter the proposal.
The proposed rules would require photographers and videographers shooting or scouting locations on New York City property (which includes the streets and parks that make up most of the city’s public space) to obtain a permit specifying dates, times, and location. This restriction would apply to any party including two or more people in a single site for 30 or more minutes, and any party of five or more with a tripod at a site for 10 or more minutes. The time limit includes all set-up and breakdown activity, and a single site is defined as “any area within 100 feet of where an activity commenced.”
It is notable that while comments on the MOFTB Web site refer to the relevant parties as “crew,” the text of the formal proposal describes them as anyone engaging in “conduct involving a communication … whether verbal or otherwise.” That would seem to include photographic subjects, making outdoor portrait and group photography sessions subject to the rules. Photographers who hold NYPD-issued press passes are exempt from the permit requirement. [Read More Here] [Sign Petition here]

Free Adobe Lightroom Presets
Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007
I’m not one to pass up free stuff so I thought I’d mention this one. Jack Davis (renowned Photoshop educator, author and Photoshop Hall of Famer) has worked with onOne Software to create one-click photo presets that work specifically with Lightroom. There are over 80 presets that work with the tone, color, as well as many other types of specialized conversions that you can achieve with your photos. As you can imagine, with 80 of them, the possibilities are pretty remarkable. So hat’s off to Jack and the team at onOne Software for jumping into what will be a brand new avenue for creativity with Photoshop Lightroom.

Nikon Capture NX: Nikon’s Answer to Photoshop
Monday, June 19th, 2006Ever wonder what an image-editing program would be like if Adobe Photoshop had never existed?
The new Nikon Capture NX software is probably the closest thing. A co-project of Nikon and the similarly named (but unrelated) Nik Software company, this program uses what they’re calling U Point technology to allow you to make quick adjustments to the zones of influence you choose. That means you can saturate certain areas, desaturate others, and color-correct in the places that need it, all without painstakingly selecting them. The other good news: None of these changes are permanent. They all happen as a list of deletable and modifiable steps that leave your original alone.
Nikon shooters who love RAW may be the most pleased with the $150 program ($90 for the upgrade), because their RAW adjustments are built into the process. Everyone else can import TIFFs or JPEGs, but won’t be able to work on RAW files. (No, it doesn’t work on Adobe DNG.) Other useful features are built in: A file browser pops up on the left; you can soft-proof at will from a menu at the bottom of the image; and the histogram, if you like to use one, sits on the bottom right corner.
